- Begin with your dog on a leash and hold it in your left hand.
- Stand with your dog on your left side, facing the same direction.
- Start walking, and as you do, say "heel" in a firm, clear voice.
- Keep the leash loose (When dog is heeling there should NOT be consistent tension on the leash) and allow your dog to walk beside you. Giving slight tugs as the dogs STARTS to add pressure and then release (Don’t allow the dog to pull, THEN redirect when the dog as he starts pulling)
- If your dog starts to pull or get ahead, quickly add and “Tug then Release”
(90% of tugs are done with you finger and wrist)
If you need to you could also change direction, saying "heel" to redirect the dogs attention.
- Reward your dog with praise and/or treats when they maintain the proper heel position.
(If the dogs is constantly failing on Heel, go to your supervisor and ask for assistance.)
