Building Comfort and Confidence with the Crate
Objective:
To ensure the dog views the crate as a positive, safe space, facilitating relaxation and proper behavior when confined.
1. Introduction to the Crate
Goal: Establish a positive association with the crate.
Materials Needed:
High-value treats
Soft bedding
Chew-safe toys
Procedure:
Place the crate in a low-traffic area with good visibility. Ensure it is appropriately sized (the dog should be able to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably).
Prop the door open to allow free exploration.
Scatter treats inside to encourage the dog to enter voluntarily. Use a cheerful tone to say, “Go to your crate.”
Reward the dog with praise and a treat every time they step inside, even partially.
Gradually increase the time spent in the crate, ensuring the door remains open during initial sessions.
2. Establishing Comfort Inside the Crate
• Goal: Help the dog relax in the crate for short periods with the door closed.
Procedure:
Once the dog is comfortable entering, add soft bedding and a favorite toy.
Feed meals inside the crate to build a positive association.
Begin closing the door briefly during meals, reopening it as soon as the meal ends.
Gradually extend the time the door remains closed after meals, always ensuring the dog is calm before opening.
3. Practicing Independence
• Goal: Teach the dog to remain in the crate without showing signs of stress.
Procedure:
Place the dog in the crate with a treat or toy and close the door. Use a calm voice to say, “Stay in your crate.”
Sit nearby but avoid excessive interaction.
Gradually move farther away over several sessions, eventually leaving the room.
Return after a few minutes, calmly praise the dog, and let them out if they are calm.
Gradually increase the time the dog spends alone in the crate.
4. Crating During Nighttime and Absences
• Goal: Ensure the dog remains calm and secure during longer periods.
Procedure:
At bedtime, place the crate in a quiet, dim area. Add a chew toy to keep the dog occupied.
Follow a consistent bedtime routine to signal that crate time is for sleeping.
During absences, keep the crate in a safe, temperature-controlled area. Leave a soft toy and ensure the dog has relieved themselves beforehand.
Note:
• Avoid using the crate as a punishment, as this can create negative associations.
• Monitor the dog for signs of distress (whining, excessive pacing) and adjust the training pace accordingly.
5. Cleaning and Maintenance
• Goal: Maintain a clean and inviting crate environment.
Procedure:
1. Clean all surfaces with a pet-safe disinfectant.
2. Dry thoroughly before returning the bedding and toys.
3. Replace damaged items to maintain safety and comfort.
By adhering to this protocol, the crate will become a trusted and positive space for your canine companion, fostering better behavior and greater relaxation.
